Complex Creations

Everything from subatomic particles and colliding galaxies, to the fractal tree in the back yard - these are all Complex Creations. Of the infinitely many angles of perception, these observations were created by Gabe R. DeWitt, a visual artist and a civil engineer from Preston County, West Virginia. His outlets for creative discovery are though photographs, paintings, and drawings that focus on fractal geometry and the complex forms that exist in the universe. In his paintings and drawings, the focus is more on the paths objects follow through time, more than rendering their physical form. It is these paths, and the patterns formed from their intersections, where Gabe finds his pretty things.

The purpose in Gabe’s style of art is beauty, or mainly what he believes/perceives to be beautiful. “I paint with colors that appear pretty to me, and I create shapes that are pleasing to my mind. I use my art as a release from the engineering world. The unbounded universe that exists on a blank page or canvas allows my mind to be free from the restriction of all things ‘man made’, save the tools of expression”, says Gabe. Often, he uses music, movies, and live events as catalysts for thought while constructing his complex creations. For Gabe, the individual strokes and markings he makes is the result of expressing his seemingly random thoughts. “I avoid trying to possess a predetermined idea with my paintings; rather, I use my approach as an algorithm to generate the end result for each piece."

Gabe has been drawing and painting all his life, and in 2004 he bought his first digital camera for the purpose of archiving structural, architectural, and artistic inspirations. His first camera was a 5 megapixel Olympus C5000, which is still used in underwater situations. Gabe currently shoots with a Nikon D300s, an upgrade from the Nikon D80, purchased in 2007. After recently upgrading his camera to a Nikon D300s, he has begun photographing more dynamic subjects (i.e. climbing, kayaking, baseball, and lacrosse).

There is plenty more to be told of Gabe, and more will surely come in time. Meanwhile, please enjoy the sample collection of Gabe's assorted works featured in the above galleries.
